How to hide payment methods in Shopify checkout: what works natively, what needs an app

Shopify shows every customer every active payment method in a fixed order. Hiding, reordering or renaming — by country, customer, cart total, product or shipping method — only works through a "payment customization". That comes from an app and runs on every plan; Shopify's own tool for it is Plus-only.

In short

“Hide payment method” means two different things in Shopify:

  1. Turn it off completely — Settings › Payments, deactivate the provider. Every store can do that, instantly, without an app.
  2. Hide it under conditions — only for certain countries, customers, cart totals, products or shipping methods; plus reorder and rename. Shopify calls this a payment customization, and it only works through an app built on Shopify Functions. Runs on every plan; Shopify’s own app for it (“Checkout Blocks”) limits payment rules to Plus.

This article covers the second case — and links to the step-by-step guides.

What Shopify does natively

  • Turn providers and methods on and off: Settings › Payments. Shopify Payments, PayPal, Klarna, manual methods (invoice, bank transfer, cash on delivery) — each can be activated or deactivated for the whole store.
  • Create manual payment methods with your own name and payment instructions. The name is free — only reserved labels such as “Cash on Delivery (COD)” or “Bank Deposit” are kept by Shopify.
  • Local payment methods from Shopify Payments (Klarna, iDEAL, Bancontact, TWINT …) automatically appear only for customers in supported countries and currencies. That is provider logic, not a rule you control.

What Shopify does not do natively: show or hide a payment method by country, customer, cart total, product or shipping method, change the order, rename PayPal. There is no field for any of that in the settings.

What a payment customization can do

Payment customizations are rules that run at checkout. Three actions, each with conditions:

ActionExample
Hidecash on delivery only domestically; hide PayPal above €500; invoice only for customers tagged b2b; cash only for pickup
ReorderPayPal first, credit card last — the first method is pre-selected
Rename“Manual payment” → “Pay by invoice (14 days)” — only for methods without a logo

Among the conditions Shopify exposes to the rule: cart total, shipping country and postcode, customer tags and customer metafields, products, collections and product tags in the cart, the selected shipping method, language and market.

Where you see the rules: Settings › Payments › Payment customizations › Manage. Creating and editing happens in the respective app.

Limits that apply to every app

These limits are set by Shopify — no app can work around them:

  • Rename only without a logo. Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, all wallets, PayPal, Klarna: hide yes, rename no.
  • Wallets can’t be reordered. They can be removed from the express section, but not moved within the list.
  • Hiding only the express section (the buttons at the top of checkout, without removing the method itself) is Plus-only.
  • Payment terms and order review are Plus/B2B features.
  • Draft orders and POS are excluded — payment customizations apply to online checkout.
  • At most 25 active payment customizations per store across all apps.
  • In the US and Canada, stores without Plus can only customize non-credit-card methods.

Plus or not Plus?

The most common misinformation in forums is “Plus only”. The actual picture:

Basic, Shopify, AdvancedShopify Plus
Public apps with Shopify Functions (App Store)
Custom apps with Functions
Shopify’s “Checkout Blocks” for payment rules
Checkout UI extensions on information, shipping, payment page

In short: an app from the App Store is enough on any plan.

Step-by-step guides

  • Hide a payment method for B2B or tagged customers — the rule by customer tag, the classic for wholesale (see “Read on” below).
  • Reorder payment methods, hide by country, by shipping method, by product, by cart total — articles to follow; until then the examples are on the app page.

Troubleshooting: payment method not showing

If a payment method is missing although no rule hides it, a payment customization is almost never the cause. Check in order: Is the provider active under Settings › Payments? Does it support the customer’s currency and country (Klarna, iDEAL & Co. are country-specific)? Is Shopify Payments activated? Only then look at the payment customizations — that list shows which rules are currently active.

Frequently asked questions

Can I simply disable a payment method in Shopify?

Yes — completely. Under Settings › Payments you can deactivate any provider and any manual method. What you can't do: hide a payment method only under conditions, such as for one country or above a cart total.

What is a payment customization in Shopify?

Shopify's term for rules that hide, rename or reorder payment methods at checkout. They live under Settings › Payments › Payment customizations › Manage and are provided by apps through Shopify Functions.

Do I need Shopify Plus to hide payment methods?

No. Public apps with Shopify Functions work on every plan. Only Shopify's own "Checkout Blocks" app limits payment rules to Plus, and only Plus can use custom apps with Functions.

Can I rename PayPal or Klarna?

No. Payment methods with a logo — PayPal, Klarna, Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay — can be hidden but not renamed. Renaming only works for methods without a logo, i.e. manual methods such as invoice, bank transfer or cash on delivery.

How many payment customizations can a store have?

Up to 25 active payment customizations per store across all apps (since May 2025; previously five).

Why is a payment method not showing at checkout at all?

Usually the provider is deactivated, doesn't support the customer's currency or country, or Shopify Payments isn't activated yet. Check Settings › Payments — and whether a payment customization is hiding the method on purpose.
