In short
Pickup in store is a few clicks to activate. When it then goes missing at checkout, there’s usually one of three reasons: the order isn’t fully in stock at the pickup location, the variant’s “Physical product” setting is off, or the location isn’t cleared for online orders. What Shopify doesn’t provide at all is setting a single product to “pickup only, no shipping”. Every route there has side effects — and with a mixed cart, checkout stalls outright on the standard plans.
How to set pickup up
As of September 2026 — Shopify moves these settings occasionally, and older guides describe a flatter menu path.
- Settings › Shipping and delivery
- In the Additional delivery methods section, click Pickup in store
- Click the location you want to activate pickup for
- Under Location status, activate Let customers pick up orders directly at this location
- Set the Expected pickup date — the processing time the customer sees at checkout
- Under Ready for pickup notification, enter your pickup instructions; this field replaces any customisations in the email template
- Save
Each location is configured separately. How many locations you can have depends on your plan.
Why pickup doesn’t appear at checkout
The order isn’t fully in stock at the pickup location. Shopify puts it plainly: pickup in store is available by default only when the entire order is in stock at the pickup location. One item without stock there removes the option — not just for that item, but for the whole order.
“Physical product” isn’t active. Pickup availability is shown only for products that have this setting activated in the Shipping section of a variant’s details. That catches anyone who deliberately unticked it to take a product out of shipping: pickup goes with it.
The location doesn’t fulfil online orders. If that setting is off at the location, its inventory stays intact but isn’t offered online — and so isn’t offered for pickup either.
The theme doesn’t show it on the product page. Pickup availability on the product has to be implemented by the theme. If it’s missing there, pickup still works at checkout. That’s a display issue, not a settings one.
Checkout says “Shipping” instead of pickup. That label comes from the theme’s default content, not the shipping settings. Merchants in the community describe exactly this wrong turn — the fix sits in the theme content.
Where Shopify stops
- No product-level “pickup only”. There’s no setting that takes a product out of shipping and offers it for collection only. Asked by a merchant with items “too large to be shipped”, Shopify’s community answer was that there’s no native function in the admin for it. The thread is years old and still accurate.
- The shipping-profile detour has side effects. A dedicated profile with no rates leaves pickup as effectively the only option — but the customer still has to enter a delivery address before that becomes apparent.
- Mixed carts stall checkout. With an item that has no shipping rate sitting next to a shippable one, Shopify finds no delivery method for the whole cart and checkout can’t proceed. Shopify’s “Ship and pickup in one order” solves this but is limited to Plus and Enterprise.
- Transfer exclusions work by collection only. Excluding items from store transfers happens in the “Transfer exclusions” section, which takes collections, not individual products.
- Pickup locations without stock aren’t the intended path. To hand over from a location that doesn’t hold the item, you need store transfers. The community workaround of zero stock plus overselling scales badly: one merchant notes it stops being manageable across many variants.
When pickup is meant to replace shipping
For bulky goods, pickup is an obvious way out, and merchants name exactly that reason: too large, too heavy or too fragile to ship. The arithmetic doesn’t quite close, though, because “pickup only” per product isn’t natively expressible — you end up at the shipping-profile detour and its side effects.
If such items should also ship, the question moves to the shipping side: what does delivery cost, and can the price be calculated sensibly at all? For bulky and freight goods that’s a topic of its own, because Shopify adds rates together and doesn’t know distance.
Things to watch
- Check stock at the pickup location first, not the settings. The “entire order must be in stock” rule explains most cases where pickup unexpectedly disappears.
- Test with a real cart. The checkout preview in the settings shows the option, but doesn’t cover the case of missing stock or a mixed cart.
- “Ship and pickup in one order” is time-sensitive. It’s currently limited to Plus and Enterprise. If you’re planning on another plan, don’t count on it today — and check the current state before building anything on it.
- Payment methods are a separate step. Setting up pickup doesn’t mean the payment methods match it. Tying a payment method to the chosen shipping method is its own rule.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't pickup show up at checkout?
The most common cause is in Shopify's own documentation: pickup in store is available by default only when the **entire** order is in stock at the pickup location. A single item without stock there is enough to make the option disappear. Second common cause: the product variant doesn't have the „Physical product" setting activated.
Can I set a single product to „pickup only, no shipping"?
Not natively. Shopify has no setting that excludes a product from shipping and offers it for pickup only. The usual detour is a separate shipping profile with no rates, which leaves pickup as effectively the only option at checkout. The customer still has to enter a delivery address first, and if a shippable item is also in the cart, Shopify finds no method covering the whole cart and checkout stalls.
What happens with a mixed cart of pickup and shippable items?
On the standard plans it stalls checkout when the pickup item has no shipping rate: Shopify evaluates every delivery method against the entire cart, and none covers both items. Shopify introduced „Ship and pickup in one order" for this, allowing shipping and pickup within one order — but it's limited to Shopify Plus and Enterprise.
Does the pickup location need stock?
By default yes, for the complete order. To offer pickup from a location that doesn't hold the item, set up store transfers that draw inventory from other locations. A workaround circulating in the community is to assign the location with zero stock and allow overselling — which gets unmanageable across many variants.
Why does checkout say „Shipping" when I only offer pickup?
That's a wording issue, not a shipping one. The label comes from your theme's default content and is changed there — not in the shipping and delivery settings. Looking for the cause in the shipping settings means looking in the wrong place.
Can I exclude products from store transfers?
Yes, but only by collection. The „Transfer exclusions" section lets you exclude whole collections — items too large to transfer, for instance. It doesn't recognise individual products, so put the relevant items in a collection of their own.
Why isn't pickup availability shown on the product page?
That display has to be implemented by the theme. If it's missing, pickup still works at checkout — only the note on the product is absent. Check the theme, not the shipping settings.
Is pickup an alternative to freight shipping?
For bulky goods it's a common route: merchants state explicitly in the community that certain items are too large to ship and should be collected instead. The limitation remains that „pickup only" per product isn't natively possible — and on the shipping side, whether those costs can be calculated sensibly at all is a separate topic.
